Sales headhunter Italy

Your sales headhunter for the Italian market

Italy is not just a market to sell into — it is one of the world’s great machine-building nations, and it buys the way it builds: on relationships. The packaging valley around Bologna, the machine-tool clusters of Lombardy and Piedmont, the plastics and automation belt of the north-east around Padua — these ecosystems are dense, family-owned and deeply networked. A salesperson without standing in that network does not get past the gatehouse.

That is the search problem we solve. As a specialised sales headhunter for Italy, we approach technical sales professionals who already carry relationships with Italian OEMs, contract manufacturers and plant operators — and we do it in Italian, because that is the language Italian industry negotiates in. Every candidate is interviewed against your niche, referenced through Italian industry contacts, and benchmarked against what the relevant CCNL level — quadro or dirigente — actually pays.

And because Italy’s economy runs at two speeds, geography is strategy: the industrial north concentrates most machinery buyers, while the centre and south reward companies that show up in person. Whether you need a first Country Manager to open the market or a Head of Sales to structure an existing Italian team, our executive search is built for one outcome — revenue responsibility in the right hands.

Market knowledge

Hiring sales talent in Italy: what employers should know

Recruiting in Italy is governed by collective agreements down to the notice period. The essentials we brief every client on before an Italian search starts:

13–14

Salary payments per year

Italian gross salaries always include a thirteenth payment (“tredicesima”) in December, and several CCNL sectors — commerce among them — add a fourteenth (“quattordicesima”) in summer. We always quote annual gross so your Italian offers stay comparable with the rest of Europe.

CCNL

Collective agreements set the framework

Nearly every industrial employment contract sits under a national collective agreement — CCNL Metalmeccanico or Commercio for most sales roles. The CCNL fixes pay grades, probation periods and notice, so the right classification is part of the offer, not an afterthought.

2

Levels: quadro and dirigente

Senior sales talent in Italy is hired as “quadro” (senior manager) or “dirigente” (executive, with its own CCNL and higher social costs). A Country Manager usually expects dirigente status — offering quadro terms to a dirigente-level candidate is a common way to lose them.

1–3+

Months of notice — plan for it

Notice periods are set by the CCNL and grow with seniority and tenure: one to three months is typical for quadri, and dirigenti can owe considerably more. Unlike Spain, Italy rarely delivers a fast start date — we factor the notice reality into every search plan. A company car (“auto aziendale”) is effectively universal in Italian field sales.

Italy Q&A

Sales recruitment in Italy: frequently asked questions

As a boutique sales recruitment agency for Italy, we run the full executive search for technical sales roles: direct approach of proven candidates, structured interviews and reference checks in Italian, salary benchmarking against the correct CCNL level, and support through offer negotiation and signing. Every mandate is handled end-to-end by the consultant who took your briefing — no CV databases, no job-board reposting.

We fill technical sales and sales leadership roles across Italy: Country Manager Italy, Head of Sales, Sales Manager, Area Sales Manager, Regional Sales Manager, Business Development Manager and Technical Sales Engineer. Typical mandates are the first or leading commercial hire of a machinery, industrial technology or recycling company building its Italian presence.

Exclusively industrial B2B niches: machinery and plant engineering — including the packaging valley around Bologna and the machine-tool clusters of Lombardy and Piedmont — plus plastics and automation technology in the north-east, industrial components, and recycling and environmental technology. This focus means we already know the candidates, salaries and competitors in your Italian niche.

Because Italian industrial sales is a relationship market, and generalists don’t hold the relationships. A specialised sales recruitment agency for Italy starts every search with an existing network of Country Managers, Heads of Sales and Sales Engineers in your niche, knows whether a role prices as quadro or dirigente, and can judge a capital-equipment track record instead of matching keywords on a CV. In a market where the best candidates never answer adverts, that network is the product.

Our offices are in Germany, Poland and Cyprus — and that is deliberate. Searches for Italy are run by Italian-speaking consultants who work the market daily: direct approach and interviews in Italian, references checked with Italian industry contacts, and candidate meetings by video or at the sector’s trade fairs. You get local-market depth without paying local-agency generalism.

You typically receive a first shortlist within 2–4 weeks, and most Italian mandates are signed within 8–14 weeks. The variable to plan for is the notice period: CCNL rules mean one to three months for quadri and often more for dirigenti, so an Italian hire is signed quickly but starts later than a comparable hire in Spain. We build that timeline into the search from day one.

A Sales Manager in Italian industrial B2B typically earns €60,000–80,000 base and €75,000–105,000 on-target, annual gross including the tredicesima. A Country Manager Italy reaches €130,000–170,000 OTE at dirigente level, a Technical Sales Engineer €55,000–75,000. Milan and the industrial north price 10–20% above the national range, and a company car is standard in field roles — we benchmark every mandate before the search starts.

In Italy’s export-driven machinery sectors, senior sales candidates usually speak workable English — it is a standard requirement in our Italian searches and we verify it in every interview. Selling itself, however, happens in Italian: owners of family-run manufacturers and technical buyers expect negotiations in their own language, which is exactly why we search in Italian rather than filtering for English CVs.

Yes — that is the typical starting point of a market entry. Your first Italian hire can be employed through an Employer of Record, a local payroll setup or an existing EU entity while your Italian subsidiary is being established. Because Italian candidates weigh CCNL classification and dirigente status carefully, we advise on what top candidates will accept and structure the offer accordingly.

All of them. Most mandates centre on the industrial north — Milan, Turin, Bologna, Padua and the surrounding districts — but we also place roles in Florence, Rome and across the south, where field presence wins the business the north takes for granted. Italian technical sales is largely home-office and territory-based, so we recruit where your customers are — not just where the airports are.
